What’s Your Money Story… and Why It Matters More Than You Think

Your money story is the narrative (often subconscious) that quietly influences every financial decision you make. It shapes how you think, feel, and act when it comes to money. It’s based on your earliest experiences, your role models, and the financial culture of your upbringing.
And here’s why it matters:
Your beliefs about money shape your behavior, and your behavior determines your results.
What Is Your Money Mindset?
Your money mindset is your internal belief system about money.
It includes how you view wealth, debt, success, and even self-worth.
The challenge?
Most of us formed our money mindset by the age of seven. That means many of the financial habits you have today are rooted in childhood patterns that may no longer serve you.
How Your Money Story Holds You Back (Or Moves You Forward)
If you’ve ever:
- Avoided looking at your bank account
- Spent money unconsciously (hello, Amazon scrolling!)
- Felt guilty for wanting more
- Believed you’re “just not good with money”
…that’s your money story in action.
Some of these beliefs are helpful. But others limit your growth and sabotage your goals.
So Where Do You Start?
Start by asking yourself a series of questions to uncover the core elements of your money story. Questions like…
- What are my earliest memories of money?
- Who taught me about money and what did I learn?
- How did my family handle saving, spending, and giving?
- What stories do I still tell myself about what I can or can’t do financially?
These answers reveal patterns you may not even be aware of and create an opening for meaningful change.
